Moving back to MT

Why did I move back?

It was an easy decision.

I only decided to leave MediaTemple after all of the horror stories of sites being down for days at a time. I however have never suffered from this. Apparently it’s because Cluster 2 on MT’s Grid Server is currently split into two different environments.

The one I’m on is the newer one, the one that’s more stable. More information can be found on MT’s blog.

Moving hosts

Just a quick note to let you know jonnyhaynes.com will be moving to the Fused Network in the coming week.

Hopefully the transfer will be smooth and without downtime. But if for whatever reason the site will be down for a bit, at least you know why.

I’ll write a full post as to why I’m moving servers once it’s completed.

CSS sprites

CSS sprites group multiple images into one composite image and display them using CSS background positioning. You can save a significant amount of HTTP requests by consolidating your images into one or more composite sprites and using CSS to selectively display parts of the sprite within your web page.

Sprites were originally used during the late 1970s in computer games to speed up load times by only having to access one graphic, rather than multiple ones.

Media hosting with Amazon S3

As I’ve started to get more and more hits from around the world, over the weekend I decided it was time to move over the media (style sheets, images, javascript, and flash) on my site to a CDN.

I’ve been using the YSlow plugin for Firefox for a while now and it keeps suggesting it as a way to speed up the access to my site. One of my work collegues mentioned Amazon S3 to me a while back as a solution, so thought I’d look into it.
